Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. Even though DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of an individual juror. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
